The function of a transformer bushing is:

To carry the high and low voltage leads from inside the transformer to the outside of the oil tank. It not only serves as insulation for the lead to the ground, but also secures the leads. The transformer bushing is one of the current-carrying components of the transformer and carries load current over the long term. If an external short circuit occurs, it handles the short-circuit current.


Therefore, the requirements for transformer bushings are:

(1)They must have the specified electrical strength and sufficient mechanical strength.

(2)They must have good thermal stability and be able to withstand the instantaneous overheating during short circuits.

(3)They should be compact, lightweight, well-sealed, versatile, and easy to maintain. 


Transformer bushings are the main insulation device outside the transformer tank. The leads of the transformer windings must pass through the insulating bushing, providing insulation between the leads and between the leads and the transformer casing while also securing the leads. Depending on the voltage level, insulating bushings can be ceramic bushings, oil-filled bushings, or capacitive bushings. 

Ceramic bushings are mostly used for transformers of 10kV and below. They consist of a copper conductor rod inside a ceramic tube, with air insulation inside the ceramic tube. Oil-filled bushings are mostly used in 35kV transformers, where the ceramic tube is filled with oil and contains a copper conductor rod wrapped with insulating paper. 

Capacitive bushings are used in high-voltage transformers of 100kV and above. They are composed of a main insulating capacitive core, upper and lower ceramic insulation parts, a connecting sleeve, oil reservoir, spring assembly, base, grading balls, measuring terminals, connection terminals, rubber gaskets, and insulating oil.
